Royal Botanic Garden
Checkpoint Four
Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), dating back to 1670, is the second oldest botanic garden in Britain – after Oxford. Numbered as one of the most popular visitor attractions in Scotland and open all year round, it brings together many inter-related cultural areas of activity.
At the same time, its mission is “exploring and explaining the world of plants for a better future” and its primary functions are as a centre of scientific and horticultural excellence, keeper of the national collections and promoter of science in the public domain. Along with its three Regional Gardens – at Benmore, Argyll; Logan, Dumfries & Galloway and Dawyck, in the Scottish Borders, the Edinburgh site is a registered charity, principally funded by the Scottish Government.
